Obituary of HARRIET ISABEL MCDONALD

Harriet Isabel McDonald, 102 years old, a devoted wife and mother and a life-long resident of Madison County, died at West Bridge Care and Rehabilitation in Winterset, Iowa, on August 17, 2017.
 
Harriet was born on November 13, 1914, in Winterset, Iowa, the third child of Alvin Newton (“Newt”) Sankey and Myrtle Rebecca (Worley) Sankey. After graduating from Winterset High School in 1933, she taught school in a one-room school in Jefferson Township, Madison County. She married Louis Edmond McDonald of rural Winterset on December 24, 1934, in Grant City, Missouri. They were married for 79 years at the time of Louis’ death in 2014. Harriet and Louis farmed on several farms in Madison and Adair counties before moving to their farm between Earlham and Winterset in Douglas Township where they lived for 35 years. Harriet was an avid gardener, was a member of Sweet Adelines and a long-time member of the Crown Rebekah Lodge No. 360 of Winterset, in which she held several office positions including Past Noble
Grand.  Harriet enjoyed dancing and bowling and did so well into her 90s.
 
Harriet is survived by a son, Ted McDonald of Winterset; two daughters, Rosa Lea (“Mickey”) Letz of Winterset, and Jo Anne (John) McIntyre of Sun City, AZ; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 11 great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
 
Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis; her infant son, Robert Louis; two infant grandchildren; brother, Lloyd (Betty) Sankey; three sisters, Mildred (Don) Daniels, Dorothy (Paul) Rambow, and Alice (Dick) Phillips; and her son-in-law, Dwight Letz.
 
Services will be 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 22,  at the Zion Church at the Madison County Historical Complex with Rev. Kevin and Rev. Sue Blader officiating.  Family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service on Tuesday.  Interment will be in the Winterset Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to her family for a future designation.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
