Page 6Winifred Marna Thulin Grant, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006 in Grinnell.
Services were held Monday, Sept. 11, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dexter with Pastors Bob Holloway and David Kincaide officiating. Guitar soloist was Tad Bullock. Organist was Nadine Shepherd. Congregational hymns included “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and “Nearer My God To Thee”.
Bearers were Alex Bullock, Tad Bullock, Aaron Grant, Ryan Grant, Jason Grant, Tyler Grant, and Sara Grant.
Interment was in South Oak Grove Cemetery at Stuart.
Winifred was born Nov. 1, 1914 in Stuart to Nels Alfred and Ida Caroline (Low) Thulin. She was raised in the Stuart Congregational Church, and graduated from Stuart High School in 1932. She attended Iowa State Teachers’ College (UNI) and Simpson College. She taught at Penn Center country school for five years, at Waukee Public School for one year, and at the Dexter Elementary Public School for five years. Later, Winifred was editor of the Dexter Sentinal. She served on the Dexter School Board and was secretary for both Dexter and Dexfield school districts. She finished her working career at Drake University. As a member of the Dexter Presbyterian Church, she served as an elder.
A life-long quilter, Winifred shared her passion for quilting by teaching others and by creating over 100 quilts, many of which were gifts to friends and family. Winifred was a member of the DT Club of Dexter for over 50 years. She also enjoyed reading, sewing, and gardening.
On June 20, 1943, Winifred was married to Orville James Grant in Maryville, Mo., after an 11-year courtship. They celebrated 55 years of marriage. To this union were born three children, Sandra, Warren, and Paul.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville, and four brothers, Harold, Warren, Samuel and Robert.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra and Lester of Moorcroft, Wyo., two sons, Warren and Terese Grant of Grinnell, and Paul and Audrey Grant of Rapid City, S.D., seven grandchildren, one great-grandson, a sister, Barbara Cline of Menlo, two nieces, and four nephews.
Kuhn Funeral Homes of Dexter, Redfield, and Earlham was in charge of the arrangements.
