HARPER DIES AT 100 YEARS

Funeral this Wednesday for One of County’s Oldest Residents

Tony Harper, one of Madison county’s oldest residents, died Sunday, June 27, at the age of 100 years, 6 months and 15 days.

Funeral services for Mr. Harper were held Wednesday morning from Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.

Mr. Harper had been bedfast for 15 years as the result of a back injury but enjoyed good health until recent weeks. He was a patient at Peterson Nursing home at the time of his death.

The son of Wheatley and Mary Bauer Harper he was born Dec. 12, 1864 near Peru, Ia. He was married to Edna Powell on Dec. 3, 1899. His wife died in 1908 when his daughters were small. He raised the two girls on a farm 7 miles south of Winterset in the old stone house that is now the Paul Jamison farm. He was the caretaker of the Peru Cemetery for a number of years.

His daughters are now Mrs. Martha Kirk of San Diego, CA and Mrs. Hattie Foster of Des Moines, Iowa. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, four brothers and one sister.

Officiating at the service was the Rev. Denis P. Curtin of Norwalk. Burial was in the Peru Cemetery.
