Death of R.L. Chapman

R. L. Chapman, former Winterset resident, died at his home in Cedar Falls, Friday, March 26th, at the age of 85 years. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Chapman, and was born May 24, 1850 in Indiana. He spent his early life in Indiana, coming west with his parents at the age of 16 years. After spending three years in Illinois, the family settled in Webster county, Iowa. Here he became acquainted with Susan A. Winslow, whom he married March 14, 1878.

Mr. and Mrs. Chapman were the parents of three daughters; Mrs. Daisy Hough, who died in Des Moines in 1907; Mrs Ruth Clark who died in Winterset, November 11, 1918, and Mrs. Hattie Howard of Cedar Falls, with whom the couple were living when he died.

Mr. Chapman joined the United Brethran Church at an early age, and acted as a lay preacher in Webster, Carroll, Lucas and Madison counties for that church. The couple moved to Cedar Falls, 16 years ago and he became affiliated with the Christian church and was a member of the board of elders at the time of his death.

The deceased is survived by his wife, his daughter, and two sisters, Mary Conklin of Dayton, and Elizabeth Innis of Emporia, Kansas. He also leaved seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Cedar Falls, Sunday afternoon at two o’clock, and the body was brought back to Winterset, on Monday and short services were held at the cemetery at 1:30 o’clock.

The Independent Argus, newspaper of Fort Dodge and Lehigh Iowa told on April 02, 1936 of the death of R.L. Chapman who lived between Dayton and Lehigh, Iowa and was an old settler. His niece Mrs. Oscar Williams was of Lehigh, Iowa.
