Mortuary: J. W. Chapman

Jabez Wright Chapman was born in Greene county, Indiana, May 19, 1853 and departed this life December 28, 1924 at his home in Winterset. In 1856, his family removed to Illinois, where they resided until 1866 at which time they came to Webster county, Iowa. In 1872, he was united in marriage to Laura S. Jameson. To this union were born seven children, three of whom passed on before. In 1854 (sic 1884)he moved to western Nebraska and while homesteading there, met with many reverses.

Broken in health, he returned to Iowa in 1900 and settled in Winterset, which was his home until his death. His age was 71 years, 7 months and 9 days.

Early in his life he united with the church and remained faithful to its teaching throughout his life. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife and four children, Robert and Henry of Des Moines, Claud of De Soto and Mrs. J.B. Clark of Winterset, one brother, R. L. Chapman of Cedar Falls, Iowa and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Conklin of Dayton, Iowa and Mrs. Elizabeth Innis of Agricola, Kansas.

J.W. Chapman Dies From Third Stroke

Aged Winterset Gardener Dies at His Home Sunday Morning. Funeral Held Tuesday

J.W. Chapman, aged Winterset citizen died at his home in the east part of the city at three o’clock Sunday morning. His death resulted from the third stroke of apoplexy that he suffered in ten days. Mr. Chapman was seventy-one years old.

Mr. Chapman was an industrious, quiet man who made many friends. Afflicted with palsey for many years he never stopped work. He was a born gardener and loved flowers and a flower garden. He took care of the lawns and gardens of many homes in the city and took pride in them.

The funeral occurred Tuesday. Reverend Shenton of the Methodist Church officiating. He is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.

J. W. Chapman died early Sunday morning after a two weeks illness with apoplexy. Of the immediate family there are left the wife, three sons and one daughter. Mr. Chapman, who was seventy-one years of age, was a man of most honesty and integrity and will be greatly missed in the community.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. D. J. Shenton of the Methodist church, were held on Tuesday afternoon.
