George Bishop Dies at His Home Here Saturday

George Marion Bishop was born November 1, 1860 in Henry county, Illinois. He was the son of Noah and Letty Bishop. At the age of 7 years he came with his parents to Madison county, Iowa. There he grew to manhood, and December 1, 1882 was married to Elizabeth Nancy Reeves at Winterset, Iowa.

They continued their residence in Madison county till the spring of 1905 when they moved to a farm near Webb, Iowa. After three years they moved to a farm near Mallard where they lived 14 years, and then moved to a farm near Laurens. When no longer able to continue the work on the farm he moved into Laurens where he spent his last years. He had been in declining health for some time, but was able to be up and around the house almost every day. Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bishop celebrated their Golden Wedding. He passed away peacefully at their home, July 11, 1936. Mrs. Bishop preceded him just one month ago.

To them were born 13 children, 8 boys and 5 girls; Mrs. Luella Bishop, Calhoun, Missouri; Mrs. Nellie Williams, Peru, Iowa; Mrs. Edna Vanderhyde, Dodge Center, Minnesota; Mrs. Ellen Dahlman, Storm Lake, Iowa; Clarence Bishop, West Concord, Minnesota; William Bishop, Havelock, Iowa; Elmer Bishop, Rolfe, Iowa; James and Walter Bishop of Curlew, Iowa; Earnest, John, Fred and Mrs. Lucille Triggs of Laurens. There are 42 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who will miss him from their paths of life. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Fannie Faux of Patterson, Iowa.

Measured in time his journey of life was 75 years, 9 months and 10 days. To those of us who haven’t known this country so long, it seems like a much longer trail back to the Covered Wagon, drawn by oxen, in which Mr. Bishop came from Illinois into the state of Iowa. As a pioneer, he came, lived a quiet, unassuming life and has passed on leaving the memory of hard, honest pioneer industry, the foundation stones of our American life.

Funeral services were held in the Christian church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Wm. H. Knotts assisted by Rev. Seward, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was in the Laurens cemetery.

All of the children were here for the funeral except the two from Minnesota and the oldest daughter from Missouri.

Among those from a distance here for the funeral were Leola Firkin, Redman, Dolly Smith and Florence Nelson of Indianola, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Fox of Rolfe, Miss Elizabeth Bishop of Fort Dodge and Ray Reeves and family of Emmetsburg.
