Services for Marjorie Baker, 83, who passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Iowa Methodist Hospital, will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, March 18 at The First United Methodist Church in Indianola with visitation from 12:30 to 2 p.m. prior to services. Burial will follow in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery
Marge was born on August 12, 1933 in Madison County, IA to Willis J. and Beatrice (Downs) Clarke. She attended elementary school in a country school near St. Charles, IA and graduated from Winterset High School in 1951. Marge was a member of the Winterset High School basketball team for four years. She was very proud of playing in the 1951 Girls State Basketball Tournament. After two years of hair styling school in Des Moines, she worked for a shop in Winterset.
Marge married Ralph F. Baker Jr. on October 21, 1951 and resided in Tampa, FL for one year while her husband completed his service in the U.S. Air Force. The family spent the next 10 years in Winterset before moving to Indianola in 1965.
Marge worked for National Travelers Life Insurance Company for 43 years. After retirement she worked part-time for Holmes Chevrolet in Norwalk and Casey’s General Store in Indianola.
Her favorite pastime was watching her sons, daughters, and grandchildren playing their athletic events and dance activities. She was very proud of all of them. Marge was a big fan of Cyclone basketball and hated to see Duke win!
Survivors include four sons, Gary (Paula) Baker of Carlisle, Randy Baker of Indianola, Dan (Betsy) Baker of Panora, and Greg (Linda) Baker of Hartford; three daughters, Jayne (Randy) Hopkins of Indianola, Jill (Steve) Arneson of Ankeny, and Julie (Erik) Methlie of Waukee; 18 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren. Marge was preceded in death by her parents; W.J. and Beatrice (Downs) Clarke; husband, Ralph F. Baker Jr.; two brothers; two brothers-in-law; 3 sister-in-laws; and many friends.
Marge will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grand mother. She had a great sense of humor and zest for life. She will be missed by many!
Memorial contributions may be made to the family in her name for a contribution of their choosing at a later date.
