December 08, 1922 - March 11, 2017Clinton Grant Jones, age 94, living for the past six months in Jonesboro, GA, was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Cleve Jones and Zella Nelson Jones; and by siblings, Robert Jones, Kenneth Jones, and Ruby Jones Luetjen.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jane Stapleton Jones, Jonesboro, GA; siblings, Ervin Jones (Nellie), Winterset, IA, and Neil Jones, Fountain, CO; children: Catherine Jones Saffels (Michael) McDonough, GA, Stephen D. Jones (Keli), Woodstock, GA, and Larry G. Jones (Patricia), San Jose, CA;
grandchildren: Steven C. Saffels (Roberta) McDonough, GA, Matthew H. Jones (Jane), San Francisco, CA, Angelyn Saffels Vaughan (Michael), Southaven, MS, and Nicholas G. Jones, Portland, OR;
and great-grandchildren: Henry Nathan Vaughan, Isabela Silva Saffels, and Charlotte Jane Vaughan; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
Clinton G. Jones was born Dec 8, 1922, in Winterset, Iowa. He served in the South Pacific in WWII in the US Army Air Corps as an aircraft mechanic, keeping P-38’s airworthy for combat from bases on Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and New Caledonia.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State College in 1949, and married the love of his life, Margaret Jane Stapleton, the same year. He worked as a Federal employee, first with the Tennessee Valley Authority, and then for 33 years with the Federal Highway Administration.
He was a faithful member of churches in Knoxville, Tennessee; Juneau, Alaska; Jefferson City, Missouri; Ft. Worth, Texas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Trenton, New Jersey; Venice, Florida; and Macon, Georgia, and he served as deacon in several of these.
He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and proudly volunteered in retirement as Associate District Coordinator for the AARP Tax Aide Program of Sarasota, County, FL, and later served as president of the Georgia chapter of the Blinded Veterans of America. He was an avid gardener, reader, and "do-it-yourself-er". He loved traveling to new places, and enjoyed conversing with friends from all over the globe.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at The Chapel of Cannon Cleveland Funeral Directors. Interment will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 15, 2017 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
