Last of Pioneer Family Goes

REDFIELD: The last of the Thomases, a well known pioneer family, died August 15. Edith Thomas Curtis, 89, was staying at the Maple Lin Manor home at Earlham.

Her father was the first postmaster in Redfield and the main business street, Thomas Street, was named after him. She was married to George Curtis, also from an old Redfield family. George was a brother of Bill Curtis, formerly of Redfield. At one time he was president of the bank here.

Services were held Thursday at the DeFord Fisher Funeral home with burial at East Linn. Rev. Bradshaw officiated. Casket bearers were Curt McCleary, Lyle Towns, C. C. Armstrong, Willard Lamb, Marvelle Hollett and Ira Dickey.

OBITUARY

Edith St. Clair Thomas, daughter of William and Elvina Thomas, was born at Redfield, Iowa, May 11, 1878 and passed away at the Maple Lin Manor Nursing Home, Earlham, Iowa on August 15, 1967. She was graduated from Redfield High School in 1897 and on September 16, 1900 was united in marriage to George W. Curtis. At that time she was a member of the Redfield Woman’s Club and Venus Rebecca Lodge and was still a member of the Redfield Christian Church at the time of her death. She was the last member of her immediate family, her father, mother, two brothers and two sisters having preceded her in death. She leaves three nieces, two nephews, their children and many friends to mourn her passing.
