Thursday, October 11, 1973Grace Blanch Harris, daughter of Isreal Freemont and Isadora May Poorbaugh Harris was born Aug. 12, 1882 near Ira, Iowa in Jasper County. Her parents later moved to her maternal grandparents homestead a mile north of Colfax, Iowa. They lived here until March 1, 1889 when her family came to the farm in the Bear Creek neighborhood known as the Harris home for 56 years.
At her request she came a member of the Bear Creek Friends Church at the age of 15 and as long as health permitted maintained an interest in the various activities of the church. She was a charter member of the Athenian Sunday School Class and an active member of the Missionary society. In her teen years she acted as secretary of the Sunday School.
April 15, 1903 she was united in marriage to Charles Hadley. Into this home five children were born: Myrtle Mrs. Clarence Coulter), Helen, Freemont, Ober and John. She resided in the Bear Creek neighborhood for 50 years. After the death of her husband March 1939, she lived with her daughter Helen, and sons Ober and John on farms south of Dexter in the Penn Center and Mt. Vernon communities.
On October 21, 1969 she fell and broke her hip and suffered a stroke a day afterwards. She had spent the last four years in nursing homes at Winterset and Stuart. Grace passed away at the Care Center in Stuart, October 3, 1973 at the age of 91 years.
Surviving are her five children; eight grandchildren: Eloise Coulter Maxon, Martha Coulter Mendenhall, Eldon Coulter, Charles Hadley, Lyle Hadley, Marolyn Hadley Guderian and Richard Wolfe; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Cecile Kenworthy James; one nephew, Harris Kenworth.
Services were held October 6, 1973 at the Bear Creek Friends Church with Rev. Kenneth Santee officiating. Interment at Bear Creek Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
