Last Rites Held Dec. 12

Funeral services were held at the First United Presbyterian Church in Dexter at 2 o’clock, Saturday, December 12, for Mrs. Margaret Ann Hill, who quietly passed away at her home in east Dexter on Thursday, December 10. Mrs. Hill was 89 years of age when death came. She had made her home in Dexter for some forty years, leaving the farm in 1917.

Mrs. Hill, known as “Grandma Hill” by all of Dexter, has been living by herself and doing her own work for these many years. Before being afflicted by arthritis Mrs. Hill crocheted lovely rugs and cared for her own yard and garden. She had been in failing health the last two years and had been bedfast about two weeks.

Rev. Robert Williams of the Dexter Methodist Church officiated at the last rites. Music was furnished by Mrs. John Shepherd, organist. She also accompanied Robert Lawson of Dexter as he sang appropriate hymns.

Floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Fred Fink, Mrs. O. W. Martin, and Mrs. Allen Atherton. The casket bearers were grandsons, Joe Smith, Clayton Scott, Charles Piercy, Clyde McMullin, Larry Allsup, and Willis Smith.

Interment was in the Dexter Cemetery. The funeral arrangements were by the Evans Funeral Home of this city.

Margaret N. Curran, daughter of Robert and Lyddia Leahyman Curran, was born in Coal City, Ill., on May 1, 1870 and passed away Dec. 10, 1959, at the age of 89 years, seven months and ten days, at her home in Dexter.

She was united in marriage to Joel Bruff Hill on August 21, 1887. To that union were born five children, four of whom preceded her in death. They made their home in Gardner, Ill., until 1908 when they came to Iowa and made their home on a farm east of Dexter. In 1913 they moved to a farm in Madison county where they lived until they moved to Dexter in 1919.

Mrs. Hill was a member of the Presbyterian church.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1945, two daughters, Gladys Irene in infancy, and Edith Margaret Payton; two sons, Earnest LaRue and Lewis E.; one granddaughter Mildred Payton and one great granddaughter, Gale Marie Piercy; and one brother who died about three weeks ago—James Curran of Grays Lake, Ill.
