Died of a Heart Attack August 19

Last rites were held at the Zion Lutheran Church at 2:30 Friday afternoon for Lewis Hill, well known Dexter business man. Lewis passed away early Wednesday morning, August 19, following a heart attack he had suffered on Friday afternoon while at his service station in Dexter. Lew, always a kind and jovial fellow, had been in the service station business here for almost 18 years. Previous to that he was engaged in farming south of Dexter.

Pastor Weber was in charge of the funeral services. A quartette composed of Mrs. LaVerne Black, Mrs. Howar Benz, Roger and Donald Weber sang comforting hymns, including “Beautiful Savior” and “Abide With Me.”

Bert Jobst, F. D. Clausen, Richard Clausen, Russell Horn, Gary Wells and Virgil Clements were the casket bearers.

Interment was in the Dexter cemetery.

Lewis Elmer Hill was born in a farm home near Coal City, in Grundy County, Ill. His parents were Joel and Margaret Hill. At the age of 14 years he moved with his parents to a farm 2 ˝ miles east of Dexter.

On March 11, 1914, he was united in marriage with Cora Fett of Dexter. The young couple established their first home on a farm south of Dexter. Two children were born to the marriage union. Martha, now Mrs. Joseph Smith, of Earlham, and Marjorie (Mrs. Clyde McMullin), of Redfield.

Most of his life the deceased was engaged in the occupation of farming. In 1941 he moved to the town of Dexter where he had purchased an oil station and which he continued to operate until the time of his death.

Surviving mourners, in addition to his widow and the two children named above, include his aged mother, Margaret Hill; one brother, James Hill, of Dexter; and four grandchildren, Willis Smith, Mary Jane Smith Allsup, Patricia and Jeffrey McMullen. Two sisters, Gladys, who died in infancy and Mrs. Edith (Harvey) Payton, and a brother, Ernest, preceded him into eternity.

In the year 1917, the deceased became a member of Zion Lutheran Church by the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and the rite of confirmation. He remained a loyal, active member of the Church until his death.
