Dexter Businessman Taken by Death

Funeral Services Held Wednesday Afternoon

Death came to Charles Johnston at 5:40 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 14, at the Dexter Clinic Hospital where he had been a patient since Labor Day. Charles had been in failing health for several months. He was recently hospitalized in Des Moines for three weeks going from the hospital to the home of his children in Des Moines for convalescing. After two weeks, he wanted to come home and was brought to Dexter. After a short time at his home, he was taken to the Dexter hospital where death came quietly just one week later, the result of uremic poisoning.

Charley, as he was lovingly called by his many friends, began his work as a mechanic after his marriage to Mary Penn in 1910. For years, he has owned and operated a garage near his residence capably repairing automobiles and farm machinery. Charley was 69 years when he passed away.

The last rites for Mr. Johnston were held at the Evans Funeral home on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 16, at 2 o’clock. The services were conducted by Reverend Robert Williams of the Dexter Methodist Church.

Mrs. K. M. Chapler provided piano music. The lovely floral offerings were cared for by Mesdames George Weesner and Harold McFarlin.

Serving as pallbearers were Allen Atherton, Warren Neal Mervin Wells, James Adkins Jr., Gaylord Thompson, and Howard Marsh.

Interment followed in the Dexter cemetery.

Charles Clarence Johnston, son of John Emmett and Effie Corby Johnston, was born December 3rd, 1889, in Nodaway County, Mo. He died at the clinic hospital in Dexter, Sept. 14, 1959 at the age of 69 years, 9 months and 11 days.

Charley, as he was known to his many friends, moved with his family to Howard County, Nebr., and in 1893 to this area. His home has been in the Dexter-Stuart area ever since. He received his education in the rural schools south of Dexter. At an early age, he united with the Penn Center Methodist church.

On Sept. 1, 1910, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Penn of the Penn Center community. They made their home here in Dexter throughout their married life. After the death of his wife in October 1958 Charley continued his mechanic shop until his health failed.

One of four children, he is survived by Carl Johnston, of Dexter, Glen Johnston of Newton, and Miss Mae Johnston of Dexter. He is also survived by six children: Elaine at home, Mrs. R. C. Williams, Mrs. Willard Brott, C. R. Johnston, and E. C. Johnston all of Des Moines and Warren E. (Gene) Johnston of Stuart. There are eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.
