Personal Items From Van Meter

Funeral services for Carl L. Backes were held Wednesday afternoon at the Trinity Lutheran church conducted by the pastor, the Rev. C. Lilie. Burial was made in the Lutheran cemetery. Carl Louis Backes was born at Luzerne on Aug. 14, 1878. In the same year at St. Paul’s Lutheran church at Luzerne, he received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism and in 1893 he was confirmed in the same church. In 1905 Mr. Backes moved into this neighborhood, working here for several years. On the 12th day of February, 1907, he was united in marriage to Miss Emilie Kramer of Luzerne. They then established their home in Jefferson township, Madison county, their present homestead. Here they became members of the Trinity Lutheran church of Jefferson township.

On April 28, 1945, Mr. Backes underwent an operation at the Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines. He passed away on Monday, May 7th at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 23 days. He leaves to mourn his wife, four brothers, William Backes of Howard, S. Dak., George, Louis and Edward Backes of Luzerne, and six sisters, Mrs. Mary Schultz of Howard, S. Dak., Mrs. Anne Wagner of Marysville, Penn., Mrs. Rosetta Ruff of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Elizabeth Cade of Winterset, Mrs. Bertha Rieck and Mrs. Alma Voeltz of Luzerne.

Among those here from a distance for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Backes, Ed Backes, and family, John Backes, Louie Backes, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Voeltz, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kramer, Mr. and Mrs. William Kramer, Mrs. Nellie Riech, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Reich, all of Luzerne, Mrs. Walter Ruff of Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schultz of Blairstown, Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Nieves and Mr. and Mrs. Martin Stolter of Keystone.
