Page 1Mrs. Mary Porter, who has lived in Winterset for fifty-one years, died at her home on East Court avenue, last Friday evening at six o’clock, at the age of 80 years. Mrs. Porter had been in poor health most of the winter.
She was born at Richmond, Ohio, where her father was a United Presbyterian minister. In 1874 she was married to W. W. Porter, and they came to Winterset the following year, and her husband established his business. Mrs. Porter is survived by her daughter, Miss Emily, and a son, W. L. Porter. Funeral services were conducted at the residence on East Court avenue by the Pastor, Rev W. Z. Allen, at 10:30 o’clock Tuesday, and burial was made in the Rock City cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Lorimer Porter was the third of five children born to Rev. William and Emily Mitchell Lorimer, at Richmond, Ohio on April 26, 1842.
She grew to young womanhood in eastern Ohio, where she began teaching during the Civil war at the age of fourteen. At the close of the war her parents moved to western Illinois, where she continued her work in and about Biggsville, Henderson county.
In 1874 she was married to Wm. W. Porter, in the church at Stanwood, Iowa, where her father was pastor. They began housekeeping on a farm at Oleva, Illinois, where in February, 1875 their first child was born, William Lorimer Porter.
In December of that year they came to Winterset as pioneer settlers. Mr. Porter entered business that winter and served continuously until September, 1925, when he retired.
Two daughters were born in Winterset, Hannah Leota and Emily Mitchell.
Mrs. Porter early became identified with the United Presbyterian congregation and with various community organizations, which later she relinquished that she might give her undivided time and effort to her church in which she was a Sabbath school teacher for over sixty years.
Kind, earnest and unselfish, she had been a shining example of Christian mother could be to her own and to the many of the community in which she lived. She is held in precious memory by those who knew her. She died on Friday, April 16, at 6 p. m., at which time she was 80 years, 11 months and fifteen days old.
The funeral service was conducted at the residence by the pastor, Rev. W. Z. Allen, at 10:30 Tuesday and the burial was in Rock City cemetery at Winterset, where her husband and daughter are buried.
