Walter William Heimberger

Walter W. Heimberger, 90, entered into his eternal rest on Saturday, November 5 at the Community Care Center in Stuart, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be held from 5-7 P.M. on Tuesday, November 8th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Stuart. Funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. on Wednesday, November 9th at the First Congregational Church in Stuart. Burial with full military honors will be at the Dexter Cemetery.

Walter was born on Christmas Day, 1925, in Rolla, Missouri to Karl W. Heimberger and Helen Myers Heimberger. He grew up in the southern Illinois area, as his civil engineer father oversaw building projects. He graduated from Adel High School in 1944, and that fall, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, with which he served in World War II as a member of the 612 Tank Destroyer Battalion attached to the 3rd Army, serving in the Rhineland/ Central Europe area. When he returned from the war, he attended the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, Missouri for several years.

He married the love of his life, Lois J. DeBoest, on December 28, 1948, and they moved to a farm south of Dexter where they raised a son and three daughters. Walter enjoyed crop farming and raising livestock.. He and Lois traveled, fished, camped and delighted in activities with their family. They moved to Earlham, Iowa in 1992, and continued to also enjoy winters in Phoenix, Arizona.

Walter was a member of the American Legion Post # 158 in Earlham, the First Congregational Church of Stuart, Iowa, and the Iowa Farm Bureau, of which he was a past Madison County president. He also served on the Madison County Zoning Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Kenneth Karl (who died in infancy) and John Karl. He is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Lois; daughter Jean (Ken) Shepherd of Dallas Center, Iowa; daughter Julie (Garry) Naberhaus of Dexter, Iowa; daughter Jo Ellen (Dale) Mueller of Brussels, Belgium; and daughter-in-law Ann Heimberger of Dexter, Iowa. He is also survived by sixteen grandchildren: Jason (Lisa) Shepherd, Abbey (Trent) Drake, Betsy (Marco) Bejarno, Pamela Heimberger, Karl Heimberger, Andy (Rachael) Naberhaus, Kelly (Wade) Reed, Katy (Eddy) Courtney, Ben (Kiersten) Naberhaus, Jesse Naberhaus, Rose Naberhaus, Sarah Naberhaus, Joseph Naberhaus, Emily Naberhaus, Christopher (Megan) Mueller, and Nathan (Megan) Mueller. And he was blessed in knowing thirteen great-grandchildren: Ian, Noah and Tatum Shepherd; Gavin, Coy and Fynn Drake: Max, Nora, and Merritt Bejarno; Parker, Emmett and Hazel Naberhaus; and Xander Reed.
