Mary Foresman was born in White Deer Valley, Lycoming county, Penn. Sept. 13, 1833. She was the eldest of a family of eight children born to Samuel and Rebecca Oakes Foresman. During her youth the family lived near Warren, Ohio, coming to Iowa in 1863. She taught school for a number of years after coming to Madison county. In 1870 she came to Winterset to make her home with an aunt, Jane Oakes. Shortly afterwards the aunt died and she continued the home they established. Her last days were full of suffering and death came as a blessed release on May 5, 1911.
She is survived by two brothers, J. O. Foresman of Council Grove, Kansas, and James Foresman, of Winterset; and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Dryden, of Ravenwood, Mo. Interment was in the Rock City cemetery.
