W. S. Woodward, who lives near the Holloway bridge in Scott township is in critical condition from a paralytic stroke. He was stricken while standing in front of the Eastman store on Wednesday afternoon and at this time, he is no better and little hopes are entertained for his recovery.

W. S. Woodward, who was stricken with paralysis on last Thursday, died on Monday of this week and was buried on Wednesday. The deceased was a long time resident of Scott township and a veteran of the Civil War in the 34th Iowa infantry.

William S. Woodward was born in Washington county, Virginia, August 23, 1839. He came with his parents to Polk county, Iowa, in 1850. He enlisted in 1862 with Company B, 34th Iowa Infantry. He was united in marriage in the fall of 1863 to Miss Della McDole, who preceded him to the better land in 1879. To this union were born nine children, wfour dying in infancy. The five surviving were ith him when he passed peacefully away, Monday, August 14, at 1:30 o'clock, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 22 das.

He was a firm believe in Christ, and united with the Methodist church when about 35 years old. His faith never wavered, and his life was spent in reading the bible and doing what he thought was doing his Christian duty.

The children are Mrs. Ona Shupe, of Pocahontas, Ia; W.S. Woodward , of Winterset, Ia; Maggie Woodward, who is living at home; Ola and Willis Woodward, of Des Moines. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters, one brother and one sister being at his bedside at the time of his death, Chris Woodward of Valley Junction, and Mrs. Dan Sherman, of Swan. He has seven grandchildren living.

The funeral occurred Tuesday at 11 o'clock, a.m. from the home in Scott township, conducted by Rev. Jno. H. Stewart, of the Baptist church, and interment was made in Rock City cemetery.
