A Pioneer Has Passed Away

John Snider was born in Wheeling County, West Virginia, June 30, 1837, and died in Sioux City, Nov. 21, 1913. At the age of five, he moved with his parents to Delaware County, Indiana. He enlisted the 11th day of March 1862 for the Civil War, in Company A, of the 36th Regiment of Indiana Infantry, and was discharged on the 20 day of March 1865, having spent three years in the service to his country.

He was married to Catherine Yahney, August 31, 1865, and to his union were born two daughters, Miss Minnie, and Mrs. Anna Seeman, both of whom, together with their mother, survive him.

In 1873 he came with his family to O’Brien County and settled in Liberty Township, later moving to Sutherland where he resided at the time of his death.

Mr. Snider had suffered for many years from exposure and injuries received during his service to his country. This suffering lately, having become almost unbearable, he had gone to Omaha, with an old comrade, Robt. W. Boyd, for surgical treatment. This seemed to help him and both started home on the afternoon of November 20th feeling fine and in good spirits, but he took sick on the train and on their arrival at Sioux City it was necessary for him to be removed from the train on a stretcher. A doctor was called and he was taken to the Samaritan Hospital where he died early in the morning of November 21st, 1913.

He leaves to mourn his departure, many friends, besides those who are related to him.

Funeral services were held from the house at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Chas. Richards officiating. Interment was made in the Waterman cemetery, the G.A.R. Post and Womans Relief Corps conducting the services.
