Jefferson James

Granville Jefferson James was born January 12, 1863, on a farm near Peru, Iowa, and passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. Della Huston, at Des Moines, Iowa, October 4, 1940. At the time of his passing he was 77 years, 8 months, 22 days old. He was the son of Annon and Phoebe Reel James.

On February 24, 1897, he was united in marriage with Ida E. Nicoson, who preceded him in death March 10, 1905. To this union were born four children, Lloyd S. James, of Des Moines, Mrs. Susie Myers, of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Reva Smith, of Rock Island, Illinois, and Della Huston, of Des Moines all of whom survive.

After the death of his wife, Mr. James reared his family to maturity. No task was too small and no work too hard. Often denying himself the necessities, he kept his children together and cared for them until all were old enough to establish homes of their own.

He united with the Christian Church about forty years ago while living in Peru. He spent most of his life in Madison Co. During the last eighteen years he lived with his children, dividing his time between them.

Left to mourn his death are his four children, fourteen grand-children, three great-grand-children, two sisters, three brothers, several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the St. Charles Methodist church, Sunday, afternoon, conducted by the pastor, L.M. Kirby. Internment was made in the Peru cemetery.
