MEGANN J. SCHMITT, Madison, Wisconsin
Megann J. Schmitt, 35, of Madison, Wisc., formerly of Olympia, Wash., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016. A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. at the South Shelter House in City Park in Winterset, with sharing time to begin at 4:30.
Megann grew up surrounded by family and friends in Winterset. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1999. She attended the University of Iowa and eventually found her way to Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash. She graduated in 2008 with a bachelor of arts degree.
Megann's life in Olympia was full of friends, adventures in the wilderness, and her career as a Library Associate for Youth Services at the Shelton, Wash., branch of the Timberline Library System. She loved public libraries because she believed they provide information for all who seek it. She considered free libraries society's greatest equalizers. She had compassion and a big heart for those in need. She was currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Library Science at University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisc.
At a memorial service in Madison following her death, friends listed these qualities: friend, lover, activist, librarian, kind heart, a sweet soul with a hearty laugh.
She is survived by her parents, Kakthryn and Kylon Schmitt; sister, Sarah and Sarah's husband Andrew Zahn; brothers, William and Gregory; one niece, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jack and Kathy Borg; William and Joyce Schmitt (Kruse) and Raymond Kruse.
Memorials may be directed to her parents and will be used to buy children's books to be donated to libraries in Megann's memory.
