MARGIE (MARGE) ALEXANDER, Winterset, Ia

Margie Alexander, 90, passed away in the home she loved in Winterset on August 6, 2016. Her wit and humor, grit and determination never wavered, even toward the end.

Margie was born August 16, 1925 in Madison County to Bruce and Fern Algreen (Lenocker). She graduated in 1942 from Dexter High School and moved to Omaha where she was first employed in the bakery department of a grocery store owned by Warren Buffett’s relative. After that she worked at a WWII bomber factory and as a telephone operator for AT&T before moving back to Iowa.

In 1948 she married Myles Walker Alexander and they had seven children. When their marriage dissolved she moved off the farm into Winterset in the early 1970s with her five youngest. Her first job outside the home was at the Gold Buffet. She was a waitress, bartender and bookkeeper. Later she waitressed at LakeView Country Club, Rookies Bar and Grill and, even in her eighties, she loved to help her daughter out at The Café in Macksburg.

Marge was an amazing employee: trustworthy, dependable, never late (and just slightly opinionated). She truly enjoyed socializing with her customers and friends over the many years.

Marge raised her seven children with great love and attention. She was passionate about golf, watching ISU and Iowa sports, gardening, taking a drive around town, seeing how tall the crops had grown, working her daily Jumble, winning a two-dollar scratch ticket, and watching the procession of birds and rabbits and squirrels feast daily in her back yard.

Marge was preceded in death by her daughter Stacey “Buffy”, her sister Marie Algreen, her sister-in-law Sharilynn Algreen, and her parents, Bruce and Fern.

She is survived by her sister Dorothy Ault of St. Lucie West, Florida and brother Ronnie Algreen of Dexter; her children Greg of Winterset, Jeff of LaCrosse Wisconsin, Danny of Winterset, Julie of Macksburg, David (Sue) of Aurora Colorado, and Jill of Winterset; grandchildren Sasha, Hillary and Jared; Mike, Nathan, Adam and Natalie; Sarah; Jonathon, and nine great grandchildren.

A visitation is planned for Sunday, August 28th at her home 1215 West Washington from 2:00 to 6:00 pm. Memorial services and interment will be at Penn Center Church on Monday, August 29th at 11:00 a.m.

Memorials may be directed to HCI Hospice of Winterset. Online condolences may be left at mccalleyfuneralhome.com.
