Ted was born on March 12, 1926 to Merritt and Athol (Campfield) Harris in Greenfield, Iowa. As a child the family moved several times with his father’s job, finally settling in Earlham in the early 1940’s. He attended Earlham High School and graduated with the class of 1944. Following graduation Ted enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames. During his time in college he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in Shanghai, China. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to Earlham. On August 2, 1952 he was united in marriage to Carol Hardin in Nebraska. To this union four children were born: Eve, Carrie, Ben and Dan.

Ted began working with his father and brother in the family’s earth moving business, Harris Construction. Following that he played a key role for McAninch Construction, a job he continued well into his 70’s. In his spare time, Ted enjoyed mushroom hunting and writing editorials. He and his wife enjoyed scuba diving and spent vacations scuba diving. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, friends and beloved pets.
