Page 1LOREN GOODWIN KILLED LAST WEEK IN QUARRY ACCIDENT
Died Instantly When Crushed Under Wheels of Rock Truck
Loren Goodwin, aged 39, of Earlham, was instantly killed about 5 p.m. last Thursday at the Earlham rock quarry where he was employed.
Goodwin, who worked as a mechanic for the Concrete Material Construction company, which operates the quarry, had just finished repairing a “dumpster”, one of the truck-like vehicles used in hauling stone at the quarry. The operator was driving it up the hill, when the brakes on the vehicle failed. It rolled backward down the hill and struck Goodwin, running over his body.
Another mechanic, “Red” York, was knocked down, but apparently escaped injury. He was taken to the Dexter hospital for observation, however.
Mr. Goodwin had lived in Madison county for many years, and was well known here. He was a native of Florence, Nebr., where he was born Jan. 12, 1908, the son of George and Fannie Goodwin. His early life was spent in Missouri. About 1922 the family moved to Weldon, Ia., then to Indianola, and later to Winterset. He formerly worked in the Sargent Brothers quarry east of Winterset.
He was married Dec. 30, 1937 to Velma Berch of Winterset. They soon moved to Earlham, where he was employed in the quarry there, with the exception of several years when he operated a truck line for himself.
Mr. Goodwin’s father died less than a year ago. He is survived by his wife; three children, Sherry, aged 8, Loren, Jr., aged 4, and Janie, 10 months; his mother, Mrs. Fannie Goodwin of Winterset; four brothers, John of Humeston, Fred and Vernon of Winterset and Lawson of Osceola; and three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Driscoll of Afton, Fern Goodwin of Winterset and Mrs. Deleath Raymond of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held from the Earlham Methodist church Sunday, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. C. A. Crouse. Burial was made in the Mt. Pelier cemetery at Patterson.
