THOMAS HIATT
Thomas Hiatt, son of Elwood and Mary Hiatt, was born near Martinsville, Ohio in Clinton county, Jan. 3, 1859, and died at his home at Ackworth, Iowa, June 28, 1944 at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 25 days.
At the age of six he moved with his parents to a farm near Oskaloosa, Iowa. One year later the family moved to Madison county, where he grew to manhood.
Thomas Hiatt was born of Quaker parentage and was therefore a birthright member of the Society of Friends. At an early age he was converted and began a long life of deep devotion to the service of God and growth of christian character. He served the meeting many years as overseer, elder and trustee. When opportunity offered he faithfully gave his testimony or engaged in prayer. He often bore testimony as trying to live so as to be ready to go at his Master’s bidding. With his recent illness he expressed himself as being ready to go when it was his Lord’s will.
During the last few months of his illness, his suffering at times was intense, but he bore it with patience and fortitude and was always so kind and thankful to the ones ministering to him.
Jan. 15, 1880 he was married to Eliza Scott. They observed their 64th wedding anniversary on Jan. 15, 1944. Five daughters were born in their home. Mrs. Nettie Allen, Mrs. Laura Smith and Mrs. Inez Smith live near their parent’s home. Florence Loretta and Mary Alice died in December, 1897.
Besides the three living daughters, there are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, all of whom reside near and were with him during his last illness with the exception of four grandsons, Wyman Smith, Bernard Allen, Robert Haldeman, and Alvin Ford, who have recently been called into the service of their country. One grandson, Knell Smith, died in early manhood. Mrs. Wyman Smith was not able to be present as she is with her husband.
His mother died Feb. 3, 1896. The father died March 3, 1904. He is also survived by one brother, Frank W. Hiatt, of Pamona, California, the only remaining member of the Elwood Hiatt family of four sons and two daughters.
About March 1, 1894, Thomas and Eliza Hiatt moved from Truro, Iowa, to a farm east of Ackworth, where they lived until 1919. At that time they moved to the little house in Ackworth were he finished his days.
Thomas Hiatt was a kindly neighbor, with a reputation for industry, fair dealing, and right living. He and Eliza built up a remarkable family spirit which has been a source of strength and pleasure throughout their long life together. Many friends have shared the joys and hospitality of this strong family group. May the memory of this good man of God and fine christian American citizen bless and inspire us as long as we live.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 30, at 3:30 p.m. at the Ackworth Friends church with interment in the Ackworth Cemetery. The pastor, Rev. Everett Davis, was in charge.
