DOROTHY E. HUGHES

Early in the morning on Wednesday, March 30th, 2016, Dorothy E. (Copeland) Hughes peacefully passed away at her home in Des Moines.

The youngest of four children of Harry and Emma (Meyers) Copeland, Dorothy was born on July 4th, 1927 in Yorktown Township in Page County, Iowa. Dorothy attended Clarinda High School. In 1954 she met Bernard (Ben) Hughes at a Halloween party. They married on January 2, 1955 and moved to Greenfield and later Des Moines. Dorothy was a stay-at-home mom for many years. Dorothy and Ben moved to Truro, Iowa in 1972 and then to St. Charles, Iowa in 1992 where she lived until 2008, when she moved to Luther Park Apartments in Des Moines, Iowa.

Dorothy was an avid card player, and with her husband Ben, was involved in square-dancing, and loved bluegrass music. Dorothy enjoyed reading, spending time with her family, and crocheting. Dorothy was a CNA in Norwalk, sold Avon, worked at the meal site in Truro and the visitor’s center in St. Charles, where she compiled a list of visitors from around the world. She loved almost any kind of craft, puzzles, ice water, black coffee, and unsweetened iced tea. She was always ready with a hard candy or a quick snack to keep her friends and family well fed. In her later years, Dorothy loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as she watched her family grow. After moving back to Des Moines, she was active with the Red Hat Ladies and her church.

Dorothy is returning home to her parents, Harry and Emma Copeland, her brother, Verrall Copeland, her sister, Fern Otte, her husband, Ben Hughes, and her daughter, Dana Warren. She is survived by her brother Francis Copeland of Prophetstown, Illinois, her children Duly (Al) Zwiefel of Ankeny, David (Sara) Hughes of New Virginia, Dori Hughes of Winterset. She has eight grandchildren-- Traci Richardson, Alexandra Buck, Heather Isaac, Aaron Malcolm, Kiersten Warren, Shelby Warren, Josh Hughes, and Jacob Hughes; and 13 great-grandchildren-Cheyenne Harre; Janssen Buck; Morgan and Madison Isaac; Taylor, Kennedy, and Brogan Malcolm; Brody Teer and Alexis Day; and Taila, Jacob, and Kenzleigh Blanchard. Countless other friends and many more family will continue to cherish Dorothy’s memory.

Memorials can be directed to the family.
