Death of Mrs. Lucy Walker

Mrs. Lucy Walker died Monday morning about ten o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clyde Addy, at the age of 90 years. Grandma Walker, as she was familiarly known, had not been sick, but passed away, with any suffering, while she was sleeping.

Mrs. Walker was well known in this county, being one of the early settlers. She was born in Boone county, Kentucky, August 6, 1835. Later she moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Edmundson to Greedfield, Indiana, where she was married to Ira Walker in 1850. They came to Madison county a short time afterwards and settled near the corner of the four townships—Lee, Jefferson, Union and Crawford In 1901 Mr and Mrs Walker moved to Winterset, and the former died in 1913 Mrs. Walker remained in her own home until last fall, when she went to live with her daughter.

Funeral services were conducted at the Clyde Addy home, at one o’clock Wednesday by Rev. L. C. Cooler, and then services were held in the Jefferson U.B. church at 2:30 o’clock by Rev. D A. Elliot of Granger. Burial was made in that cemetery. She is survived by five children, James A. Walker of Aurella, Agnes Crumbaker, Lucy Alexander, Lydia Addy, and Seth T. Walker all of Winterset.

On that same day Grandmother Walker, one of the sweetest old ladies we have ever known, quietly passed away with almost no sickness or suffering at the age of 90.

Mrs. Lucy Walker

Lucy Ann Edmondson, the daughter of J. W. and Mary Edmondson, was born in Boone county, Kentucky, August 6, 1835, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clyde Addy, of Winterset, on April 12, 1926, at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 6 days.

With her parents she moved to Greenfield, Indiana, where she was married to Ira C. Walker, March 14, 1850. They came to Madison county, Iowa, a few years after their marriage, in company with her parents and settled near the corner of the four townships, Lee, Jefferson, Union and Crawford, where they lived until 1901 when they found farm life too strenuous and established their home in Winterset.

Her husband passed away December 1, 1913. She stayed in her own home until the last year of her life, thus completing seventy-five consecutive years of home-making, the keynote of which was hospitality. To this union were born eleven children, W. F. Walker, deceased; James A. Walker, Orilla, Iowa; Mary Jane Fletcher, deceased; Agnes Crumbaker, Lucy A. Alexander, Lydia E. Addy and Seth T. Walker, all of Winterset, and four others who died in infancy. Also there are living twenty grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren to mourn her loss.

She was reared by very devoted Christian parents of the Methodist church and she and her husband, with other old settlers, were instrumental in organizing the Jefferson U. B. church, of which she remained a faithful member until death. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon.
