Martha Roberts was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, September 9, 1827 and died at her home in South township, July 31, 1900.

November 28, 1846 she was married to Joseph Dowler and soon after they moved to Iowa. She was the mother of thirteen children, four of whom preceeded to the land of the blessed, and there with her husband awaited her coming.

Early in her married life she, in company with her husband, joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church but after coming to Iowa they lived many years outside the pales of the church, finally through the influence of the prayers and entreaties of two daughters they united with the M. E. Church of Elm Grove about the year 1884; they were afterward transfered to the Ohio Church but lived Christian lives until the end.

She will be greatly missed in the community, she was an angel of mercy in the sick room, where during the years of her activity, she loved to minister to the wants of friends and neighbors. For near five years she has been a constant sufferer from several diseases, but bore it all with christian fortitude, many times shouting God’s praises and looking forward to the time when she would meet the loved ones gone before and be forever free from pain; yet she was willing to await God’s own time which came July 31, 1900. When the sun was sinking in the west she peacefully fell asleep to awake in another world.

Friends and neighbors sympathize with the nine sorrowing children, realizing mother’s place can never be filled, she cannot come again to them, but through God’s mercy they may go to her.

Rev. Chas. Hoover preached her funeral at Hanley to a large congregation of friends and relatives and her remains were laid to rest in the St. Charles cemetery beside those of her beloved husband.
