Ronnie McMains, 72, of Newton died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines.
A memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 1, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials may be directed to Wallace Family Funeral Home (if mailing, please add “Attn: McMains Family” on the envelope).
Ronnie, the son of Luther and Ethel (Hircock) McMains, was born Dec. 16, 1943, in Iowa City, Iowa. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1962. Ronnie served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After returning from the war, Ronnie was an officer with the Des Moines Police Department from 1969-1976. He then worked as a ranch hand in Minden, Neb. Upon returning to Iowa, he worked as an electrician for Keystone Electrical Mfg. He later worked as a prison guard at the Mitchellville Women’s Prison and then a security guard at DMACC. He ended his career working as a custodian at Winterset High School. Ronnie was a member of the U.S. Bowling Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Judy of Newton; children: Denisa McMains, David McMains, Ronnie McMains II, Ronda McMains of Ankeny and Robbie (Marjorie) McMains of Des Moines; his step children: Tammy Smith of Newton and Dennis Hansen of Kellogg; 26 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his sister, Judy McMains of Des Moines.
Arrangements are being handled by Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
