John A. Olmstead was born in Henry county, Ill., November 13, 1845, and died at his home in Whitten, Iowa, November 22, 1913, aged 68 years and 8 days. For the past few years he had been a sufferer from asthma which resulted in heart failure and the end came suddenly about midnight Friday.

When a boy he moved to Michigan, where he enlisted in the Tenth Michigan Volunteer Infantry the last year of the war, serving three months. After the war he came with his parents to Hamilton county, Iowa, locating near Jewell. There he was united in marriage with Rosetta Smith on December 31, 1868. To this union ten children were born, Jessie, who died in infancy; Albert L., now living on a farm near Forman, N.D., Mrs. Lillian Poyner and Mrs. Emma Bucholz, both of Eugene, Ore.; Mrs. Ruth Dowler of East Peru; Edmund W., of Des Moines; Ezra R., Leo E., Mrs. Blanche Schryver and Mrs. Bessie Lyon of Whitten.

He had been a member of the Christian church nearly 18 years and was a member of the G. A. R. at Union. Besides his wife and children he leaves one sister and three brothers and a host of friends to mourn his loss.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Christian church, Rev. T. N. Hauser officiating. Interment was in the Benson cemetery.
