Elmira Effie Garmire, fourth child of Theopilus and Catherine Garmire was born August 18, 1884 at Walnut, Iowa. At the age of three she moved with her parents to Nebraska where they lived one year. They moved to Colorado where her father died. The mother with her five children moved to Iowa, taking up residence on a farm south of Dexter.

After living on the farm for a few years they moved to Dexter. At this time Edna Bissel North came to live with the Garmire family.

Mira (as everyone called her) attended the local school until it was necessary for her to find work in the community to help with family expenses.

On March 12, 1910 she was united in marriage to Jesse A. Ross of Dexter. To this union was born three children, Jesse, Edwin, and Katherine. A daughter, Berniece, by a former marriage, also shared this home.

During Mira’s life her hearing became impaired, making it hard for visiting with family and friends. She loved doing things for others and worked hard at keeping her family happy and their home a place of comfort.

Her husband preceded her in death by eight years, after which she and her son, Edwin, made their home together. Being a great reader she enjoyed the facilities of our Public Library, and at one time made the remark that it was hard to find books that she had not read. Her late years were made brighter and fuller by the gift of a hearing aid.

She departed this life on Thursday, March 21, 1957. Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Bernice Hamman of Chicago; Jesse and Edwin of Dexter, and Katherine Towey of Des Moines; two sons-in-law, Harry Hannan and Jo Towey, a daughter-in-law, Gladys Ross; three sisters, Mrs. Mae Neff of Earlham; Mrs. Myrtle Kriner of Hampton; Mrs. Edna North of Keosauqua; one brother, John Garmire, of Yakima, Washington; one grandchild, and three great grandchildren.
