Page 1, column 2ED MENDENHALL DIES AFTER OPERATION
Edward Mendenhall, a foreman of this paper from 1883 to 1887 when major Palmer owned it, died June 8 in a hospital in Kansas City during an operation. He was a brother of Mrs. Sam Koser of Winterset, and Mrs. Fred Hudson of Union township. He was sixty-seven years old.
Ed learned the printing trade as a boy in The News office under his brother Harvey, who was then foreman. He was foreman of The News several years going to Pierce, Nebraska, where he was foreman of The Times published then by Arthur Goshorn. He finally landed in Kansas City where he became owner of a job printing establishment that he developed into one of the largest printing concerns of that city, printing legal work only.
As a boy he was popular in Winterset where he grew up. He was a capable, artistic printer and liked his work. He was regarded in Kansas City as one of the city’s influential and leading citizens.
