Funeral Sunday for Mrs. Hays, 82

Mrs. Matie I. Hays, life-long resident of Madison county, died at the Horton Nursing home Thursday, August 25, at the age of 82 years. With the exception of the past ten years, when she resided in Winterset, she spent her entire life in the Worthington community.

Mrs. Hays, the daughter of Bradley and Margaret Whitnack Brown, was born in the Worthington neighborhood, October 31, 1872. On July 3, 1894, she was married to Charles William Hays, and they became the parents of three sons and one daughter: Eben Hays of Winterset; Charles Hays of Des Moines and Mrs. Bruce Garrett of Earlham. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert, and by her husband.

She was a member of the Worthington Methodist church, and was active in the Women’s society of that church for many years.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hays were held Sunday afternoon, August 28, from the Richards Funeral Home at Winterset, with the Rev. W. W. Stemmetz officiating. Burial was made in the Worthington cemetery.
