James E. Thornton was born in Earlham, Iowa, on June 23, 1864, and passed away at the Nu Roc Nursing Home, in Blackwell, Wisconsin, on April 16, 1956. He had five brothers and two sisters, all of whom preceded him in death.

On June 13, 1891, he was united in marriage to Mary Bowers. To this union four children were born. One of these, a son, Merle, preceded him in death at the age of three and one-half years.

Mr. Thornton was a prominent contractor and builder in his home community for many years. He was a birthright member of the Society of Friends. In 1920 the family moved to Wisconsin, where they have lived ever since.

Mr. Thornton leaves to mourn his loss his wife, Mary, of Laona, Wisconsin; one daughter, Mrs. Earl Nellis of Woodward, Iowa; two sons, Rev. N. O. Thornton of Laona, Wisconsin, and Rev. C. W. Thornton of Janesville, Wisconsin; six grandchildren, Rev. J. O. Thornton of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Darrell and Marylon Thornton of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Flora, DeVere, and Emma Thornton of Laona, Wisconsin; and one great grandson James Lee Thornton of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Funeral services were held in Wisconsin, followed by another service in Earlham, at the Leeper Funeral home, on Saturday, April 21. Rev. Nora Craven, a long-time friend of the family, was in charge of the Earlham service, assisted by Rev. L. Willard Reynolds. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
