Alice Burns, daughter of William and Paulina Burns, was born in Redfield, Iowa on August 1, 1887, and passed away at the Grace Hospital in Detroit, Michigan on May 16, 1955, at the age of 67 years, nine months and five days.

Her early life was spent in Redfield where she attended the public schools.

On March 9, 1910, she was united in marriage with Albert Peterson of Buxton, Iowa, and to this union two daughters were born, both dying in infancy.

Much of her early married life was spent in the colorful town of “Old Buxton”, later moving to Detroit for a period of years. She then came to Earlham where she was employed by the local telephone exchange for twelve years.

Returning to Detroit, she continued with her work for the Bell Telephone Co. until she retired two years ago after more than thirty years of faithful service.

Alice loved her work and those with whom she worked. The girls from the Detroit office, especially Ann Westphal and Velma Crouch as well as Ruth and David Swanson were faithful friends during her long stay in the hospital of over three months, each taking their turn, sitting at her bedside and lending words of comfort through their daily prayers.

She was a member of the Lovilia, Iowa Eastern Star and of the White Shrine in Des Moines.

Alice was the last of her immediate family, her father, mother, three sisters, Lenora, Mrs. S. C. Welch and Mrs. Martin Welch, having preceded her in death.

Left to mourn her passing are one niece, Mrs. Von Allen of Earlham and two nephews, Willard Welch of Earlham and John Welch of Winterset and other relatives and friends.
