Page 6Another of Madison counties old settlers has passed away in the person of William Lucas who died at his home in this city last Monday morning of heart disease.
Mr. Lucas came to this county in 1852 and settled on a farm within a mile of the city limits where he has lived ever since with the exception of the past few years which was spent in town.
He has always been a man highly respected in the community where he has lived so long an honorable and up-right life.

Page 5, Column 4William Lucas, one of the pioneers of Madison co., died suddenly of heart failure at his home in the southeast part of the city Monday morning at 10 o'clock.
After eating a hearty breakfast he went to the barn to attend to some chores. He returned to the house about 9:45 and complained of not feeling well and ten minutes later passed peacefully away in his chair.

Page 1Obituary – Wm. Lucas
Wm. G. Lucas was born near Zanesville, Ohio, January 29th, 1821. He moved with his parents to Sangamon county, Illinois, when he was 9 or 10 years old, where he lived until he moved to this county. He was married to Hannah Bardrick, May 14th, 1845.
He moved to Madison county, Iowa in 1852 or ’53 and purchased a farm 1 mile northwest of Winterset, where he lived until March 1899, when he moved to the present residence in Winterset where he died Monday morning.
There was born to Wm. and Hannah Lucas 10 children, 5 boys and 2 girls. (Typed as printed in paper) Two of the boys died while young. One daughter died in 1902 and one son in 1902. Hannah Lucas, his wife, died May 14, 1867 and he did not marry again.
He died December 12th, at about 10 o’clock in the forenoon, being 83 years, 10 months and 13 days old.
