Mrs. Elza Penn was born August 19, 1879 on a farm south of Dexter. Her maiden name was Amelia Caroline Kauffman. She was one of 7 children born to Jacob and Anna Kauffman. She was baptized in infancy in the Zion Lutheran Church at Dexter and confirmed as a young girl in the same church.

On December 28, 19--, she was joined in marriage to Elza Penn of Dexter. The couple made their first home on the Kauffman farm. After later residences in Omaha, Nebraska, and Mitchell, South Dakota, they returned to Dexter in the fall of ----. Her husband passed away on February --, 1921. No children were born to this marriage union, but she and her recently deceased sister, Suvilla, did provide a home for 2 nieces, Mrs. Florence Kauffman Lenz of Council Bluffs and Mrs. Naomi Kauffman James of Phoenix, Arizona.

In the year 1936, the deceased began working at the Dexter Hospital Clinic. She continued employment there until the time of her death. Incidentally, she is the first employee to pass away during the 26 year history of the hospital while in active service of that institution.

On February 5 she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which resulted in her death on February 8, at the age of 82 years, 3 months and 10 days.

The deceased was an active, loyal member of the Lutheran church all her life.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Anton Neff, of Menlo; and 2 brothers, Adolph Kauffman, of Long Beach, California, and William Kauffman of Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Her funeral service was conducted last Saturday, February 10, in Zion Lutheran Church, Dexter. A ladies’ quartet sang appropriate funeral hymns. The casket bearers were John and Charles Willrich, Lawrence Marsh, Peter Ohrt, Charles Scar, and Bert Jobst. Roy Evans was the funeral director. Her body was laid to rest in the Dexter cemetery.
