Edward Howard Payne, son of Tilman Howard and Nancy Jane Payne, was born December 18, 1862 south of Adel on the old Payne estate in Dallas county, Iowa. Passed away in Des Moines at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 19 days.

At the age of two years, his father, a Civil War veteran, passed away; and several years later his mother married Isaac F. Neff.

Howard grew to manhood in Dallas and Madison counties. He received his early education in the Madison county schools. He also attended Simpson College at Indianola, two years, and Drake University, Des Moines, graduating June 1883.

He joined the Christian Church in early life, and was an active worker as long as health permitted. He was a life member of the Masonic and I.O.O.F. lodges of Dexter.

On January 19, 1886, Howard was married to Mary Eva Marston in Penn township. To this union were born six sons and four daughters; the youngest child, Hope Loraine, died in infancy. He was also preceded in death by his wife, February 20, 1925. He leaves to mourn his passing these nine children: Mrs. Stella Stevenson, Phoenix, Arizona; Edward T., St. Cloud, Minnesota; Mrs. Inez Halford, Kansas City, Missouri; Paul N., Cresco, Iowa; Bryan F., Vancouver, Washington; Truman H., Des Moines; Roe L., Vallejo, California; Omer K., Panora, Iowa; Mrs. Dorothy Winn, Red Oak, Iowa; 27 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He also leaves two half-sisters and four half-sisters: Mrs. Carrie Lehman, Colombus, Ohio; Mrs. Cora Jones, Boone, Iowa; Prof. Frank Neff, Des Moines; John Neff, Earlham; Byron Neff, Troy, New York, and Roy Neff, Pamona, California; besides many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the Penn Center church November 9, 1943, 2 p.m., interment Penn center cemetery.
