Joseph L. Harwood, one of the prominent farmers of Walnut township for many years, died at his home near Peru last Friday. He was 78 years of age.

Mr. Harwood was born on May 1, 1864, in Clinton county, coming to Madison county with his parents when he was 4 years old. They located on a farm in Walnut township where he spent the remainder of his long life.

He was married on Dec. 25, 1890, to Marillo Stanfield. They were the parents of three children, one of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Grace Turner of Roscoe, Calif; and William Harwood of Ft. Bragg, Calif. They also reared an adopted son, Roy Cross, now of LaVerne, Calif.

His second marriage was to Charlotte May Gifford, They were the parents of four children, one of whom, Joseph Woodrow, died at the age of 3 years. Those surviving are Mrs. Bessie Haven of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, Canada, Mrs. Alma Hart of Omaha, and Mrs. Mary Harwood of Fremont, Nebraska.

In addition to the surviving children, he leaves his wife; eleven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this Wednesday from the Peru church, in charge of the Rev. J.H. Walls, and burial was made in the Peru cemetery.

JOSEPH HARWOOD DIED MARCH 26

Joseph Harwood, resident of Madison county for the greater part of his life, died at his home near Peru on Friday, March 26, at 9:30 p.m. at the age of 78 years and 10 months. Funeral services were held at the Peru Methodist church on Wednesday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Walls, of the Peru Methodist church, was in charge of the service. A sextette composed of Leo Hamand, Supt. Price, Mrs. L. Hamand, Mrs. Zella Shearer, May Shearer and Suzie Hogue accompanied by Esther Griffith, provided the music.

Joseph Leland Harwood was born in Clinton County, Iowa, on May 1, 1864. His father was a native of Warsaw, Kentucky, and his mother was born in Maryland. In 1868, the family moved from Cedar county to Madison county and settled on a farm west of Peru. His father died in September 1908 and his mother followed him in March 1909.

In 1890, he married Marilla Stanfield, and to this union were born one daughter and three sons, one of whom died in infancy. On October 29, 1908 Mr. Harwood married Miss Charlotte May Gifford, and to this union three daughters and one son were born, the son dying at the age of three.

Madison county history says “J. L. Harwood remained at home during his youth and his time was divided between attending the school of district No. 3 and helping his father with the work of cultivating the fields and caring for the stock”.

He is survived by six children: grace, William, Roy, Bessie Levina, Mabel Alma, and Mary Ione, his wife, eleven grandchildren, and for great-grandchildren. His only brother, William Austin, made his home with his brother until his death.
