Samuel H. Gardner, for 24 years a mail carrier on the Barney rural route, died last Friday at a Des Moines hospital at the age of 79 years.

Mr. Gardner was born in Park county, Indiana on February 11, 1863, the son of Henry Harrison and Susan Yeager Gardner. When he was six years old, he came with his parents to Madison county, which remained his home for most of his life. Starting in 1903, he carried mail on the Barney rural route for 24 years. He was a member of the Barney Church of Christ.

On March 8, 1894, he was married to Viola D. Bishop. They were the parents of two children. The wife died in 1903.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Belva G. Warren of Lorimor; a son, Ernest J. Gardner of Swan; a sister, Mrs. Emma Adamson of Thurman; and two brothers, W.A. Gardner of Lorimor and C.D. Gardner of Mingo. He also leaves two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Barney Church of Christ, in charge of the Rev. L.F. Davis of Winterset. Burial was made in the Barney cemetery.

SMA GARDNER, 79, DIED JANUARY 22

Samuel Haney Gardner, son of Henry Harrison and Susan Yeager Gardner, was born in Park county Indiana, February 11, 1863, and passed away at a Des Moines hospital, January 22, 1943 at the age of 79 years. When he was six years old, the family moved from Indiana to Madison county where he spent the rest of his life.

On March 8, 1894 he was united in marriage to Viola D. Bishop who preceded him in death May 2, 1903. To this union two children were born, Belva G. Warren of Lorimor, Iowa, and Ernest J. Gardner of Swan, Iowa.

In the fall of 1903, Samuel Gardner was appointed mail carrier of Barney, and he acted in such capacity, giving twenty-four years of service.

He is survived by his two children, Belva and Ernest; two grandchildren, Mary Gardner of Sivan, Iowa and Donald Warren serving in the Navy at Puerto Rico; one sister, Mrs. Emma Adamson of Thurman, Iowa, and two brothers, W. A. Gardner of Lorimor, and C. D. Gardner of Mingo, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L Perry F. Davis at the Barney church of Christ, January 24th at 2:30 p.m. interment was in the Barney Cemetery.
