November 1943Derwin L. Hulbert, a resident of the Barney neighborhood for many years, died last Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Conard of Martensdale. He was 76 years of age.
Mr. Hulbert was a native of Wyoming county, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 9, 1867, the son of Alonzo J. and Lydia Ann Allen Hulbert. When he was nine years old, the family moved to Michigan, where he grew to manhood. He was married October 20, 1899, and was the father of seven children, three of whom preceded him in death. His wife died in recent years.
Mr. Hulbert moved his family to Barney in 1912 and spent many years on a farm in that community. He was a member of the Church of God.
He is survived by four children, Paul Hulbert of Des Moines, Joe Hulbert, of Lorimor, Mrs. Conard of Martensdale, and Bill Hulbert of Earlham. He also leaves three brothers, Ed Hulbert of Patterson, Leslie Hulbert of Shelby, Michigan, and Allen Hulbert of Canada, in addition to 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday from the Barney Church of Christ, in charge of the Rev. E. W. Mueller, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church at Martensdale. Burial was made in the Barney cemetery.

Derwin L. Hulbert, aged 76, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elmer Conard of Martensdale, on Friday, November 19. Hulbert farmed near Barney, Iowa, since 1912.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 22, and the Church of God, Barney. Services were in charge of Rev. E. W. Mueller, pastor of the St. Paul’s Lutheran church at Martensdale. Interment was made in the Barney cemetery.
Derwin Lewis Hulbert, son of Alonzo Jackson Hulbert and Lydia Ann Allen Hulbert, was born November 9, 1867 in Wyoming county, Pennsylvania. When a boy of nine years he moved with his parents from Pennsylvania to Michigan, where he grew to manhood.
On October 30, 1889, he was united in marriage to Amy Hulbert. To this union were born seven children, three of which preceded him in death. In 1912 he moved with his family to Barney where he engaged in farming. Mr. and Mrs. Hulbert observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1939. Mrs. Hulbert preceded him in death. He was a member of the Church of God.
He is survived by three sons, Paul Hulbert of Des Moines, Joe Hulbert of Lorimor, and Bill Hulbert of Earlham; one daughter, Mrs. Jennie Conard of Martensdale; three brothers, Ed of Patterson, Leslie of Shelby, Michigan, and Allen of Canada; 16 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and many other relatives.
