Macksburg News

Marion Ritter died at his home on Sunday evening after a long illness. No arrangements had been made by Monday morning.

Francis Marion Ritter, oldest son of Elijah and Elizabeth Ritter, was born in Marion County, Indiana, July 5, 1856, and departed this life Sunday June 14, 1936, aged 79 years, 11 months and 9 days.

In 1875 he came to Iowa with his parents and settled on a farm in Dallas County near Earlham.

On January 27, 1881, he was united in marriage to Ellen McKibben of Earlham and two years later moved near Macksburg in Monroe township.

In the spring of 1885, they moved to Grand River Township, where they have since resided, having lived in their present location 32 years.

Six children came to bless their home, four boys an two girls. The widow, with five children survive, the oldest daughter Alice dying in 1910.

The surviving children arc Lloyd, Ernest and Etta Huss, who reside near home, and Clarence and Carl of California, who were unable to be present. Also nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, three sisters and three brothers; Mrs. Mary Carpenter of Oklahoma; Mrs. Lucinda Gowens of Washington; Mrs. Deborah Hughes of Missouri; Isaac of Nebraska; Ed of Oregon and Will at Dallas Center, Iowa. Three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.

Although he never held a membership in any church, about 28 years ago he took his stand for the Master. He was always honest and upright in his living standard. A good neighbor and an indulgent father. Always putting others before himself.

He had been a member of the Macksburg I.O.O.F. lodge for forty years and a charter member of the Camp.

Funeral services were held at the home on Wednesday, at 2:00 o’clock by Rev. Summerbell of Macksburg, assisted by Rev. Fleishman of Dallas Center and he was laid to rest in Moon Cemetery.

Those from a distance attending the funeral were: Mrs. T. N. Hughes, of Independence, Missouri; Charles Birge, of Chicago, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Will Ritter of Dallas Center; Mr. and Mrs. V. M. Ritter, of Winterset; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ritter of Ft. Dodge; Mr. and Mrs. Jesse McKibben, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Mitchell, of Earlham, Mrs. Lizzie Orahood, Mrs. Zettie Morrison and Miss Mary Williams of Redfield.
