Death of Newton Duff

Newton VanDyke Duff, a life long resident of Madison County, died at his home in Earlham, February 17th. He was sixty years old. Mr. Duff was born and reared on a farm in Jackson Township. As a young man he followed the carpenter’s trade and alter he moved to Earlham, he became a barber.

In 1900, he was married to Miss Mary Alexander. The deceased was a member of the Earlham Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary, and a son, R. F., of Des Moines, three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Hockenberry, Mrs. Ella Rogan and Mrs. Velma Wilson and a brother, Milton Duff.

The funeral was held in the Presbyterian Church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The services were conducted by Rev. W. C. Porter. Burial was in the Earlham Cemetery.

RITES SUNDAY FOR N. V. DUFF

Had Been Resident of Earlham 30 Years; Death Due to Strokes of Apoplexy.

N. V. Duff, for 30 years a resident of Earlham, passed away at his home here Friday afternoon at four o’clock. A stroke of apoplexy Friday morning after an illness of several months following a similar stroke last May was the cause of his death. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Earlham Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Porter officiating. Burial was in Earlham Cemetery.

Newt, as he was familiarly known to his numerous friends, was born 60 years ago on a farm near Winterset. With the exception of a few years spent at Fort Dodge he had resided in and near Earlham all his life. At various times he was engaged in the real estate and insurance business, also following his profession as a barber.

He is survived by his widow, one son Russell of Des Moines, one brother C. M. Duff of Earlham, and three sisters, Mrs. Chas. Rogan of Dexter, Mrs. W. M. Wilson of Des Moines and Mrs. Wm. Hockenberry of Earlham. The obituary of Mr. Duff will appear next week.

Newton Vandike Duff, oldest son of Robert and Josephine Duff, was born Dec. 30th, 1872 on the family homestead near Pitzer, Madison Co., Iowa, and departed this life at his home in Earlham, Iowa, February 17th, 1933 after a lingering illness of 9 months.

He was married to Mary Alexander Aug. 22, 1900. To this union two sons were born, Russell Floyd and one son dying in infancy.

On Sept. 25th he made the good confession at his home uniting with the Presbyterian church. Newt as he was familiarly called by his host of friends was of a sunny disposition which endeared him to his family, never finding fault with anyone and seeing all the good in everyone.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, one son Russell of Des Moines, three sisters, Myrtle Hockenberry and Ella Rogan both of Earlham, Velma Wilson of Des Moines, and one brother, Milton also of Earlham.
