Death Has Taken William N. Smoot, Resident of Centerville Past 18 Years

William Nelson Smoot, pioneer resident and farmer of Madison County, Iowa, and for the past 18 years a resident of Centerville, passed away at his home on South Fifth Street at noon today, following an illness of three years.

Mr. Smoot was born in Madison County, Iowa, near Winterset on March 2, 1858. He lived on the family farm there with his parents until 23 years of age, when his father passed away. From that time on, he took care of the farm and cared for his widowed mother. In January of 1882, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Roberts of Centerville.

Mr. & Mrs. Smoot went to the homestead farm and lived there until eighteen years ago when Mr. Smoot retired, coming then to Centerville. He was known as a successful farmer and a man of excellent character. He was highly respected and has a host of friends and relatives who mourn his death.

He was active in church work, having united with the Congregational denomination over twenty years ago. It was largely through his efforts that a Congregational Church was erected near his homestead, at Winterset. He was also a member of the Modern Woodman Lodge and known as a man who spent his life in the service of others with a view to making others happy.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, two sisters, Mrs. W. M. Hartsook, of Winterset and Mrs. Adeline Laidley, of Earlham; also, by one brother, Albert P. Smoot, of Ealiham.

Burial was at the Oakwood Cemetery, Vermillion Township, Appanoose County, Iowa.
