Henry H., or better known as Harry James son of Nathan and Elizabeth Shupe James, was born in Madison. County, Iowa March 20, 1871, His mother was left a widow when he was but nine months old. He grew to manhood on a farm near Winterset. Although he spent several years away, he has always claimed Madison County as his home.

He was converted in the winter of 1895 and since that time has served his Master in many Christian capacities. He first united with the U.B. church and remained a consistent member of same until the winter of 1917 when he moved his membership to Hanley where he and his family united with the M.E. church. During the winter of 1917 he was the means of bringing many souls to Christ, giving his special admonition to the unsaved ones of his Sunday school class. He was a very efficient Sunday school teacher and greatly liked by the members of his class which numbers more than 40.

On March 15, 1903, he was united in marriage to Lula Breeding. To this union, six children were born: four boys (Mark, Donald, Rodell, Everett) and two girls (Ethyl and Ruth), all of whom survived him. He leaves to mourn our loss besides the above mentioned, one brother, J.M. James or Winterset and a half-brother, Maurice Carter of Santa Ana, California, besides a host of friends and neighbors.

He began ailing about the 10th of December, 1917 and since that time has been a constant sufferer. He went to the Iowa Congregational Hospital where, as a last resort, he underwent a serous operation for cancer of the pancreas from which he failed to rally and quietly passed away at 6:20 on the morning of April 27, 1918, aged 47 years, one month, seven days. He is resting from his labors, but his works will follow him.
