April 1893

Elijah I Ritter was born in Green county. Indiana,. May 20. 1828, the eldest of six children. Two brothers and a sister survive him. He was married November 14, 1850, to Elizabeth Mendenhall. Twelve children were born to them, four of whom died in childhood. The eight surviving children were all with him in his last sickness, but two of the daughters had to return to their homes in Missouri, a few days before his death.

There have been times for several years when he was not expected to live, and for several weeks, the end had been expected from day to day, but never a word of complaint or murmur escaped his lips during all his pain and suffering. He moved to this county about twenty-five years ago and has lived in several places, but on account of his retiring disposition, he never formed many acquaintances far from the home circle. He was converted in 1880 and united with the Evangelical church in Webster Township and has never transferred his relationship.

The end came, at last. On the morn of April 26, peacefully and quietly, he fell asleep in Jesus, from which none ever wake to weep. Services were held in the M. E. Church in Macksburg, on Saturday, by Rev. H. 0. Lawrence assisted by Rev. I. M. O’Flyng. the remains were then laid to rest, till the Lord shall come to call the ransomed home. (buried at Moon Cemetery)
