Samuel W. Cook Dead

Samuel W. Cook, a pioneer resident and most highly respected man of Union county, passed away at 11:06 o'clock Thursday, Feb 7, at Cottage hospital in Creston, following a long illness from stomach trouble. He had been ailing for some time past and a short time ago was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The death of Mr. Cook will be a shock not only to his family but to all people of the communities in Union county where he resided and will be greatly missed, especially in his home community.

Deceased was born in Henry county, Iowa, March 14, and was 68 years 1o months of age. He came to Union county 35 years ago, and located on a farm near Lorimor. He was a member of the 45th Iowa Infantry, Company E., and was affiliated with the G.A.R. Post at Macksburg. He had resided in Lincoln township about 7 or 8 years. He also was a member of the Baptist church.

His aged wife and seven children survived. The children are: Edwin of Wray, Colo.; Mrs. B.C. Dale, of Aline, Okla.; Mrs. W.L. Cochran, of Macksburg; Lora A. Cook, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Leonard J., of Mohall. N.D; Jesse of Wray, Colo.; and Allen of Spaulding, Iowa.

The funeral was held at Lincoln Chapel church Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, and interment at the Moon cemetery at Macksburg. Rev. H..H. Moore was the officiating clergyman.

Samuel Wilson Cook was born in Salem Ioaa, March 14, 1845. Hew died of ulceration of the stomach in Creston, Iowa, Feb. 5th, 1914 at the age of 68 years 10 months and 22 days. Hew had been ailing or about three weeks, but was only in the hospital about 10 days. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss.

He was married to Mis Margaret Hammons, of Jefferson county, Iowa in 1867, who died a few years later, leaving one son, Edwin M. Cook of Wray, Colorado. Mr. Cook was then married to Cynthia Ann Hammons of Jefferson County, Iowa, in 1872, who passed away on Feb. 28, 1884, leaving five children, three girls and two boys: Mrs. B.C. Dale, of Aline Oklahoma; Mrs. W.L. Cockran, of Macksburg, Ia.; Miss Laura Cook, of Minneapolis; Leonard J. Cook, of Mohall, N. Dak.; Jessie L. Cook, of Wray, Colorado; Nettie Alice, preceding her mother to the throne of Grace.

Mr. Cook and Mrs. Amanda E. Childs, of Van Buren county, Iowa, were united in marriage Feb 26, 1889. To this union was left one adopted son, Allen Cook, of Spaulding Ia. Besides his wife and children he leaves nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was a soldier in the civil war. He was raised a Quaker, but when he was a young man he united with the Baptist church of which he has been a consistent member.

The funeral services were held in the Lincoln Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 8th, at 10 a.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. Moore. The remains were laid in the Macksburg cemetery. The love and esteem in which our brother was held was shown by the crowd which gathered at the church and by the beautiful display of flowers.

Samuel W. Cook passed away at the Cottage Hospital in Creston, Thursday morning February 5, 1914. Mr. Cook has not been in the best of health for some time but the trouble was not considered serious. A few days before his death he started for Creston and while on the way was taken with hemorrhage of the stomach. He entered the hospital and upon examination it was found that he was suffering from ulcers of the stomach. Some of these ulcers had eaten through into an artery which caused the hemorrhage. He continued to steadily fail until death claimed him Thursday morning at 11:06 o’clock.

Mr. Cook was born in Henry county, Iowa, March 14, 1845, and was 68 years 10 months old at the time of his death. He is survived by a wife and six children, Edward and Jesse of Colorado, Mrs. Nora Dale of Oklahoma; Leonard of North Dakota, Laura of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Bertha Cochran of Macksburg; also an adopted son Allen. these children with a step son Dr. Elmo Childs of Cainesville, Missouri were all present at the funeral which was held Sunday morning at 10 o’clock from Lincoln Chapel. Interment was made in the Moon cemetery south of Macksburg.

Mr. Cook was a veteran of the Civil War having served in the 45th Iowa Infantry. Several years ago he with his family came to Macksburg residing for a time in town, then moving to a farm one and one half miles east of town. About eight years ago he sold this farm and bought another near Spaulding, Union county, where he lived at the time of his death. During his long residence here, Mr. Cook was known to be a man of admirable character and sterling worth and commanded the respect of all his acquaintances. His life was exemplary in every way and the family may be comforted in the thought that he is now reaping the reward of a well spent life. The many friends here extend sympathy to the bereaved family.
