Gertrude May, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Bricker, was born in Penn township, Madison County, Iowa, Sept. 18, 1884. She died Nov. 5, 1905, aged 21 years, 1 month 16 days.

She was a member of the M.E. church at Penn Center the greater part of her life having been spent near there. There she grew to young womanhood, loved and respected by all who knew her. Two years ago she attended school at the Earlham Academy where she endeared herself to a large circle of friends.

Death is sad at all times, but it is particularly so when we stand at the grave of one who has been stricken down in the very beginning, when life with all of its hopes and possibilities stretch before them. And though we “who see through a glass darkly” may question His way and think the young life rudely broken: Yet we know that a life hid with Christ in God is complete and we’ll trust him and say though
“The Cross that he gave may be heavy

Yet it ne’er outweighs his grace.”

Gertrude was the only daughter in a family of seven, which makes her loss more keenly felt. She was a loving daughter, a kind sister. Her gentle presence was like the sweet perfume of fragrant flowers. And so as our hearts bleed in sympathy for the bereaved parents and brothers we commend them to the one who wept at the grave of his friend.

Funeral services were held at the Penn Center church Wednesday, Nov. 5, 1905, where a large concourse of friends gathered to pay their last respect.
