Word has been received here of the death of A. J. Surratt of Springfield, Ill., in an auto accident on the night before Thanksgiving, as he and his wife were enroute to Oklahoma to spend the holiday with a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Nan Morgan. Mrs. Surratt was the former Nan Thompson of Jackson township and a teacher of the eighth grade at the South ward in 1911. Mr. Surratt was killed when the car he was driving overturned on U.S. No. 66 near Rolla, Mo., and Mrs. Surratt received slight injuries.

The Surratts were married at the late Hugh Thompson farm in Jackson township.

Mr. Surratt, who was 67 years of age, was agricultural statistician in charge of the Illinois Co-operative Crop Reporting service in Springfield. He had been with the U.S. and Illinois Departments of Agriculture since 1922.

Funeral and burial services were held at Springfield. He leaves his wife, and their four children: three daughters and a son. Mrs. Pearl Thompson of Jackson township is a sister-in-law of the Surratts.
