Herbert Howe Kale son of W. D. and Olive Kale was born in Truro, Iowa, July 14, 1908 and died by drowning near Truro July 6, 1928, age 19 years 11 months and 24 days. He graduated from the Truro High School in the class of 1926. He was converted during the Cooper and Carder Revival and united with the Christian Church Nov. 7, 1920.

His entire life has been spent in Truro, Iowa, where he was known and loved by all and since his graduation from High School he has been associated with his father in the Hardware and Motion Picture business. Herbert was a model boy and it is with feelings of sadness too deep for words that we record his passing from us.

He was always to be found in his class at Sunday School and in all church work especially the music, on account of his ability as a singer. Everyone loved to hear him sing.

Young, vigorous, promising, hopeful of ambition, devoted to parents, brothers, friends on every hand, prosperitys smile upon the cheek- the whole world as bright and peaceful as the morning sun in June- planning for life-yet prepared for heaven. Then a ripple in the wave- a “fast fleeting cloud”, he is gone, the sun smiles again- all is still- the voice that spoke is silent- the golden cord is severed – the flowers bloom and the robins sing over another silent home- the white marble keeps silent watch by day and night- the busy old world moves on in sun and shade as before. He is dead. Sweet be his sleep and glorious his resurrection.

He leaves to mourn: his parents, two brothers, Loren and Marvin his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Kale and Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Howe, other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral was held from the family home Monday afternoon, July 9, 1928, conducted by Rev. Alfred Hurst, of Albany, Mo., and was attended by a large number of sympathizing friends and neighbors. His remains were laid to rest in the Ebenezer Cemetery.

Herbert Kale Meets Death in Priest Pond.

Human words cannot express the shock and sorrow felt here when the word was telephoned to town last Friday evening, July 7th, that Herbert Kale had met his death in the large pond on the John Priest farm, six miles west of town. A number of the boys from town have been going to this pond to swim. After supper, Herbert, in company with his youngest brother, Marvin, Merrill Hutchinson, and Berl Shoemaker went to the pond. Herbert was attempting to swim across the pond and thinking he could not make it, called to his brother, who was near, for assistance. Marvin hurried to help him and succeeded in getting him within ten feet of the bank, when Herbert became strangled and weak, taking his brother, under the water with him, twice. Seeing that he was unable to save him Marvin swam to shore to send for help. The other two boys had already swam across the pond and were too far away to give Marvin any aid.

Soon as the word was received everyone rushed to the pond to do every possible thing they could to help. Several men, who could dive, tried to recover the body but the water being so deep and no diving board they were unable to reach the bottom. The side of the bank was then dynamited to drain the pond to a depth of ten feet and the body was recovered by dragging a hay rake through the pond by the use of a long rope. Nearly five hours had elapsed from the time he sank until the body was recovered. Dr. Harken, of Osceola, had been called and came immediately, bringing a pulmotor with him, but by the time the body had been recovered it was too late to do any good. The heartfelt (incomplete) like a dream from which (incomplete) to find it was (incomplete). To the sorrowing members of his bereaved family, so severely stricken, and in their extreme sorrow we commend them to the consolation, that, as so successful was his earthly career, he is safe in the arms of Him who doeth all things well.

Herbert was nineteen years of age, and for the past two years has been the manager of the Crown Theatre here. He was lovable, always pleasant and friendly to young and old alike and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Monday afternoon, July 9th, from the home, with interment in the Ebenezer Cemetery.
